France, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, is the second largest country in Europe, a little smaller than the state of Texas, and is sectioned with plains and mountains, rolling hills and abundant rivers. Rugged cliffs front its coastline along the English Channel and stretch along the Atlantic Ocean to the Pyrénées in the south, the border with Spain, while the snowcapped Alps span across its border with Italy. The country's highest point is Mont Blanc with an altitude of 15,770 feet and is the second highest point in Europe. France is cooler and wetter to the north and west and warmer and drier near the Mediterranean but overall maintains a principally temperate climate.
