In the northwest section of South America lies the tropical equatorial country of Colombia, (named after Christopher Columbus) a nation that boasts of spectacular natural beauty. It is lined with the Andes Mountains near the Pacific Ocean on the west and embraces three distinct branches of the mountain range in the southern part. Twice the size of France, Colombia is now famous for its fragrant coffee and radiant green emeralds, though a few centuries ago it was known for its mines filled with gold and copper, which the Spanish excavated when they conquered the land. There is a variety of climate zones - soaring snow-capped Andean summits, unspoiled Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, the enigmatic Amazon jungle (largely uninhabited and unexplored), lush green coffee croplands, and La Guajira Desert in the northernmost tip of South America where cacti dot the arid landscape and mountainous sand dunes drop into the ocean. Mangroves and coconut palms flourish along the Caribbean coast while the forest regions, which cover almost one-half of the country, include mahogany, oak, walnut, cedar, pine, and several varieties of balsam trees. Jaguars, pumas, tapirs and other wild animals roam the country, searching for something to devour.
